What a great first week of school! I have enjoyed getting to know each child and their interest. They are a terrific bunch of students! We have spent most the week getting to know one another, learning how to do things, and establishing classroom rules.
Word Wall Words/Spelling Words--Each week you child will bring home a list of 3-4 words to practice saying and spelling with you. Your child needs you to review these words with them to help build their reading and spelling vocabulary. They will be taking a spelling quiz each Friday over these words and on Thursday if there is no school on Friday. These words are also posted on the blog site each week as well as the 1st quarter list posted under handouts.

It is hard to believe we just finished up 1st Quarter. Our Fall party was great, thanks to Mrs. Hollan & Mrs. Loeber for planning and organizing the activities. Also, many thanks to all the other parents who helped with all the stations. Thank so much for making a wonderful memory for the students!!!
In writing students are getting ready to start their informational unit of writing. Math they just finished unit 3 test with working on adding to 20 and using number lines to count on. We also just concluded a unit on apples with the students observing/logging the changes in an apple. Of course, we also had to taste test some apples. The students really enjoyed learning about the different kinds of apples! Next, week we will be discussing fall and the changes in our weather, plants, and animals.
Last, remember with the weather bouncing around so much please send in a jacket with your child every day in case it is cold outside. Thanks for all you do!

Please continue reading with your child at home and recording the books they read on the reading sheet. It is very important that the students continue their reading because as their reading levels increase the reading components also advance such as: fluency, decoding and comprehension. Also, continue to read word wall words with them and practice spelling words these words also carry over into your child's writing. Your help is truly appreciated! Thanks for all you do!
February is a fun filled month with many themes. Our themes for this month are: sun/shadows, U.S. symbols, presidents and non-living.
In writing, we are finishing up our opinion/persuaive writing unit. The students are learning how to try and convince others to agree with their view points about topics. In math students have been working on tens and ones and finding patterns in 120 charts. We have had a lot of fun with our science unit this month doing experiments learning how liquid turns to solid, making our own fake snow, and learning about heat effects the melting process.

This past week the students have been learning about Pilgrims, Native Americans, and Thanksgiving. The students incorporated these themes in their writing and social studies unit.
The students have been working on writing informational pieces and they have learned how to make a Table of Contents page along with writing introductions and conclusions to their book.
In math we have been working on area and finding the missing numbers, interpret (retell the action and sequence) and solve addition and subtraction story problems, and finding multiple combinations of a number.
Our class also had a great time synergizing with fourth grade on a stem project of called "Save the Turkey" where they created a structure in which they hide the turkey. We read the book Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving in which the children in the story saved the turkey from being eaten on Thanksgiving Day. The students goal was to create a structure in which their turkey was hidden. The first graders and fourth graders had a great time accomplishing this goal. Below are a few picture from the project.

We had a week of fun!
In writing students are finishing up their narrative writing paper and making a book. Math they just finished taking unit 2 test and are now starting in unit 3 with working on adding to 20 and using number lines to count on and count back. We also just concluded a unit on apples with the students observing/logging the changes in an apple. Of course, we also had to taste test some apples on Friday. The students really enjoyed learning about the different kinds of apples! Next, week we will be discussing fall and the changes in our weather, plants, and animals.

In writing the students have been learning how to write narrative stories and sequences their small moment stories. They are great writers and seem to be enjoying writing about experiences they have had.
Look for math homework in your child's folder which will usually be sent home once or twice each week, depending on the lesson. If it is an assignment that is due back it will be in the left pocket of your child's take-home folder. If it is in the right side of the folder, it is optional. A few of the students have been asking for extra "homework". They are welcome to do any of the extra math sheets that are not assigned. If you notice that your child struggled with a particular lesson, feel free to use the optional pages/problems to practice at home. Our math can be very challenging, so a little bit of extra practice may be needed at home.

Willard North teachers will be at the Willard McDonald's on Tuesday, October 3rd from 4:00 to 7:00. Please come out and support our school. Mrs. Wallace will be there from 4:00 to 5:00!!

Parent please save your Box Tops and send them in with your child. Our school collects box tops to get $ for our school!! Thanks for all your help and support!

Happy Mother's Day!
It is hard to believe that we are in the final days of the school year. In writing we are completing our realistic fiction books, In math, we are working hard to learn place value (tens/ones), how to add and subtract multiples of ten, and we are currently learning to add a 2-digit number to a 1-digit number. We are using plastic cubes, ten frames, and base ten blocks to help us learn how to work with bigger numbers.
Even though we are no longer switching classes for STAR Reading, we still have STAR in our classrooms everyday. So keep on reading those books in the blue bookpacks. We need to finish the year strong.
We are ending our year with Mother's Day activities, author study, and the last week we will be celebrating our memories from this school year.
Below are a list of end of the year activities:
May 6th--Field Day--High School Football Field
Lunch from 11:30-12:30 at field
1st grade activities--12:30--2:00
May 18th--Super Tiger Celebration--2:30
May 19th--Talent Show 1:30
May 20th--Last Day of School--dismissal at 12:30

If you are meeting us there and you are bringing your child's lunch, please send me a note so that I don't have them get a school lunch. If you are chaperoning and would like to bring a blanket for us to picnic on that would be great.
We should return to school by 12:30. I am looking forward to a great day.
Mrs. Wallace
It is hard to believe that it is already fourth quarter. The end of the year is approaching fast. We have many themes for this month. We will learn about spring and the changes that are happening with our weather, plants, and animals. We will continue discussions on living things with plants and life cycles. Last, we will study maps and learn how to use them.
In math, we are learning how to add and subtract using two digits numbers. The students are also working hard at becoming fluent in addition/subtraction. Please continue to work on these things at home!
In writing, we are working on writing a realistic fiction stories and will end the year with narrative writings. We are also continuing to work on using good conventions and word choice in our writings.
Please continue to have your child read the books in their packs 2-3 times a week with you. Thanks for all you do!

What are we learning?
This is a very busy month for our class with lot of exciting projects. The month began with a week of celebrating Dr. Seuss and many fun learning activities. The next two weeks the students will be learning about living and nonliving things. Students will be doing various experiments and observations to determine what living and nonliving things need. In writing the students are starting a unit on Realistic Fiction Narratives.

This past week the students have been learning about Pilgrims, Native Americans, Thanksgiving, and exploring things that happened "Times Long Ago and Now". The students incorporated these themes in their writing and social studies unit. We also made edible log cabins with pretzels sticks, churned some butter like the pilgrims and of course taste tested the butter.
The students are now finishing up their informational writing unit and they have learned how to make a Table of Contents page along with writing introductions and conclusions to their book.

Parents please remember to send ice cream money in as soon as possible if you haven't already.
This week your child has been learning to write simple sentences using nouns and verbs, adding one digit numbers, and reading leveled books. I am not sending home reading packets during the summer but I am doing reading groups in order to keep their reading levels up. Have a fun and hopefully cooler weekend.
